Vinegar Hill, Enniscorthy

This is a photograph of Vinegar Hill in Enniscorthy. Taken from the town centre.

Vinegar Hill was the area where a large battle occurred between the British and the Irish back in June of 1798. The 1798 Rebellion in Ireland was in full swing and the Wexford United Irish rebels had a large camp on top of the hill. On the 21st of June, a force of 15,000 British soldiers attempted to quell the insurgency by launching an attack against the rebel encampment. The Battle of Vinegar Hill resulted in a British victory, with up to 1000 men lying dead. During the battle, British forces bombarded the hill with artillery before launching an all-out attack.

This photograph was taken from the Castle Hill area in February of 2015.
